Helping Students Take a Step Back so They Can Get Back on Track
Back on Track (Formerly Alternative Suspension) is a short-term, intensive program designed to support high school students who are struggling at school or facing suspension. Instead of time away becoming a setback, the program transforms it into a constructive experience focused on growth, reflection, and a successful return to school.
Through personalized guidance, small group workshops, and ongoing support, students develop the skills, confidence, and motivation they need to get back on track—both academically and personally.
Helping Youth Succeed in School and Life
At the YMCA, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed. Back on Track connects teens with supportive mentors, structured activities, and a community that understands them. The program provides a safe environment where students can reflect, rebuild confidence, and develop the tools needed to thrive in school, work, and life.
Participants gain:
- Greater resilience and confidence
- Stronger social and emotional skills
- Renewed motivation to stay in school
- Reduced problematic behaviour
- A clearer path forward for academic success
A Preventive and Restorative Approach
Back on Track is a 3–5 day program for youth aged 12–17 who are experiencing difficulties in school.
The program offers students the opportunity to pause, reflect, and reset in a structured and supportive environment.
Rather than reinforcing punishment, the program focuses on personal growth, responsibility, and positive change.
Students have the opportunity to:
- Step back and break the cycle of negative behaviour
- Gain perspective in a supportive and welcoming environment
- Receive one-on-one support from a qualified youth worker
- Participate in small group workshops
- Reflect on personal goals and values
- Reconnect with school and social activities
- Receive follow-up support with schools and families
Who the Program Is For
Students can participate in Back on Track if they:
- Are referred by school staff as an alternative to suspension
- Are recommended by school staff as a preventive intervention
- Request participation themselves through school staff
The program works closely with schools, parents, and community partners to ensure the student receives the support they need during and after the program.
How the Program Works
Back on Track is built around a simple three-step process designed to help students reset and move forward.
1. Cool Down
Students find themselves in a new and structured environment, putting a stop to the downward spiral.
2. Reflection
The program encourages students to reflect during one-on-one meetings and group workshops.
3. Commitment
The program motivates students to make changes that will have a positive impact in their school environment.
A Place for Reflection and Growth
Back on Track focuses on the individual needs and experiences of each student.
Through personalized support, youth workers help participants:
- Navigate a challenging moment constructively
- Understand the root causes of behavioural issues
- Reduce impulsive, aggressive, or disruptive behaviours
- Build social and emotional skills
- Clarify their goals for school and the future
- Reconnect with motivation and self-worth
- Catch up on school work during the program
- Discover helpful community resources and opportunities
